If you like Jeff Vandermeer (in particular the second book of the Southern Reach Series), if you like Kafka (The Trial, The Castle), if you liked Piranessi (Susanna Clarke) and if you have a good sense of humor and a tragic sense of labor, you’ll like this book. JAYAK is about a dude who can’t get a job, and when he does get a job he finds himself being exploited, and as he learns more about this particular line of work (cleaning up spooky stuff from workers’ dreams to make them more effective laborers in waking hours) he also finds that he too has been put in the position of exploiter.
Pros: funny, unique story, neat present-tense writing style, strong characters, dark, grim, labyrinthine, literary, but not in an annoying way, pretty damn smart. The audiobook is TOP notch.
Cons: Itss length makes it feel a little redundant at times, but I think that was a market decision. Readers these days seem to fiend for books over 10million pages. Where do you people find the time?
Overall, I recommend it.
